Ong Ping Din | Composer
Singaporean composer Ong Ping Din (b. 2001) views his music as reflections and expressions of identity and character. Drawing from the rich tapestry of Singapore’s ethnic music while seeking fresh approaches and sounds, he strives to create music that transcends genres and cultures. His recent eclectic output features acousmatic music, spectralism, algorithmic composition and intercultural ensembles.
Ping Din’s works have been performed by Les éclats du son, Nina Janßen-Deinzer, Carolin Ralser, Christoph Wichert and the Straits Ensemble, to name a few. His work Propagations (2022) for reed quintet received a special mention by the Atlantic Reed Consort at the 15th Calefax Composers Competition.
As an active erhu performer, Ping Din frequently performs in Chinese Orchestras, including the National University of Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Management University Chinese Orchestra, and MOJO. Having a keen interest in Southeast Asian music, Ping Din recently participated in a cultural exchange at Bali Jaladara Foundation, where he learned and performed Balinese gamelan, dance and Wayang Kulit.
Ping Din is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music (Composition) at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Associate Professor Peter Ivan Edwards and Dr Tan Yuting.
